#1 Player Registration Discount
I had planned to send this letter last week to give everyone a one week warning on the early registration discount but in the midst of holiday travel just didn’t get it done. As a result we will extend the deadline for the early registration discount until Monday January 5th – if you pay on line the discount expires at midnight, or if you mail a check it must be postmarked on the 5th.
#2 Team Registrations
It continues to look like we will set a record for teams this year as we have gone over the 200 team mark in record time. Look who has registered and if your team is not registered encourage your coach to register as we will start filling up age groups within the next 30-45 days. Link
#3 Family Fundraising
The economy is putting financial strain on quite a few families. The fundraising program that is in place can be used for families to earn $500-2000 to attend nationals for more information. Fill out Contact form on website
#4 Hardship Exemptions
I want to clarify that our goal in the hardships is only to put controls in place not to limit players. We have had a lot of hardship exemption request for players that attend co-op three days a week but are still 51% homeschooled and this is not a problem.
#5 Team USA
Registration is now open for Team USA. Link

Writers and Bloggers Needed
Nationals is looking for writers and bloggers for two projects:
Writers – this year we will be doing a special program/magazine called The Showcase. The program will include All-American information and history about past national tournaments. We are looking for a number of people who would be willing to a take writing assignment, research and write an article for The Showcase. It is our goal to gather and preserve the history of Nationals through The Showcase over the next 5-7 years. If you’re interested in writing or editing please contact us through the website contact form.
Bloggers – we would like to have 4-5 people write a blog during the National Tournament. It would be best to have people who are not attached to one team for this project so they can watch and write about 4-6 games per day. We really want to enhance the interaction for people at home as well as having write ups on 25-35 games each day. This will be great if we can find bloggers, I would love to see a bunch of graduates do this.
Special Thank You
The response that we have received from yesterday's announcement has been 100% positive and we really appreciate the spirit of cooperation. We do realize that there will be questions and concerns and we welcome all comments as we strive to make Nationals an even more amazing experience for all.

New Website
I know some of you may have thought we lost some focus with the new Fund-It program and while we are on a mission to get every homeschool program using the Fund-It Program because we want every team to be able to afford to attend National's. At the same time we will be giving you a solid does of improvements each month that will keep you looking forward to the best Nationals ever, Springfield 2009
The new Nationals site is up and running, there is still a lot of work to do on it but I think you will like the way the site looks and works.
Early Registration Discount 6 days to get your registration filled and check in the mail
Hotels
Filling up quickly over 70% of the available hotel rooms in Springfield are already reserved, don’t wait to long and get stuck 30 miles away.
Rings -WOW
I just saw the final on the Champions, All-American and All-Region rings -- incredible, check it our on the main page of website there is a link mid page.
Coming next week
Eligibility
There has been a little confusion with our statement that we are adjusting the eligibility requirements. Let me clarify there are no changes to the rules we are just defining the Hardship Exemption Requirement and integrating them with the player registration form. The goal is to clearly design and explain the Hardship Exemptions and division play for the National Tournament.
On line Player Registration should be ready by end of the first week of October.

Really Great Idea
Coach -- I have updated the player's blog with a couple of interesting notes but I wanted to make sure you got this information so I doubled up.
National's TV Sponsor and More
I was looking for a TV sponsor to pay for 7 games to be televised at Nationals this year. Not only did I find a great sponsor but that sponsor is offering a great way for every team to benefit, you need to read this.
I will give you a brief overview of the program and if you need more information please feel free to contact me directly.
Yahoo does approximately 7 billion dollars a year in internet search engine revenue. While that sounds like a lot the fact is that it is only 25% and Google revenues are almost three times that amount.
Yahoo has designed a program for large nonprofit organizations, like the Red Cross, to develop a long term revenue stream for the nonprofit that assists Yahoo in reaching its goal of increasing market share.
Fund-It is the organization that is administering this program for Yahoo for Christian organizations.
Fund-It contacted me about being a sponsor of Nationals and will be the sponsor of the Homeschool Showcase including underwriting the cost to televise the All-American Games.
As part of the agreement all homeschool teams and organizations may participate under the National Basketball Foundation 501c3 status. While this program is reserved for large organizations, Fund-It has agreed to allow any team that we refer to them to participate.
Through this program everyone one can benefit in three key ways:
1. Teams make the money directly from Fund-It -- Our Nationals staff does not have the time to administer this type of program so we have worked it out that each team will sign their own agreement and be paid directly each month.
2. Players and teams that attend Nationals benefit because Fund-It is a sponsor that has agreed to renew each year if we are able to get enough teams involved and will even increase their financial involvement to help fund other things that we would like to add in future years.
3. Teams that cannot afford to attend Nationals will be able to afford to attend.
Where's the MONEY?
It is a very simple program that pays your team $.10 for every search (click through) that you make through the special Yahoo Fund-It/Benefit Bar.
What does that mean to your team? Fund-It estimates your team will earn $15,000 over the course of the year. This estimate is based on 50 computers using FUND-IT/BENEFIT BAR. Many families have 2-3 computers so add in friends, families and alumni and 50 computers is relatively conservative. There no fee to sign up, the installation is very easy less that a couple of minutes (unless you have Vista than it takes 5 minutes), and you are asking people to use basically the same service they have, which no one benefits form currently. There is really no reason for anyone that you ask not to sign up. Did I mention that there is one difference about the search? The Fund-It/Benefit Bar will not searching for pornography or "hate" groups. Even if their estimates are evangelistic and your team only earns one third of estimate that is $500 per family for travel for Nationals, or free uniforms plus whatever your team wants to use the money to buy. All for doing something that you and your friends already do. If you want more information just have a team representive contact me and I will send you Fund-It's direct contact information. Please make sure to tell me what team you are with. If your program has multiple sports no problem they all can sign up and be tracked seperately

Basketball Nationals will be moving in 2009
Due to the current economic conditions and unpredictable facility situations that Tim Flatt explained on the Nationals Conference Call, the NCHBC has opened entertained the possibility of eight cities hosting the 2009-2011 National Championships. We have talked to and or visited 8 cities in the last 5 weeks
Three cities have been eliminated:
1. Dallas
2. Wichita
3. Oklahoma City
The five remaining cities meet the following minimum criteria:
A. Within 350 miles of OKC
B. An arena that is available for next three years with a min capacity of 7,000
C. College arenas that can host semifinal games with min of 2,000 seating (must be nice setting)
D. The ability to start putting games on TV both local cable and National cable.
The next step for the cities is to compete on the following level:
A. Hotel capacity
B. Hotel Rates
C. Effectiveness of the CVB (Convention and Visitors Burea)
D. Secondary gyms
What is the process that we are waiting for?
A. CVB will send out leads to all hotels and lock in group rates
B. Gym contracts will be provided
C. Final commitments from the city concerning their participation will be made.
D. We will weigh the cities bids and eliminate cities that do not offer the best package
E. We will select the city, sign contracts, hold a press conference and notify you.
We will have a final announcement by August 15th
What should you do now?
A. Do nothing, even if you think you have an inside scoop, just wait. The key for us to build a long term relationship in a city is to work with the CVB.
B. Since there are numerous cities bidding you may here an inside scoop but it will more than likely be nothing more than I am telling you right now.

Rumors, Rumors and more Rumors
Rumors are flying
This morning I received five phone calls inquiring about the 2009 NCHBC moving from Oklahoma City. I heard that we were moving to Stillwater, OK, Dallas, TX and Shreveport, LA. I even received a call from the Oklahoma City Convention and Visitors Bureau inquiring as to next year’s status due to the Sonics moving to OKC. Obviously they were concerned because we had planned to move to the Ford Center either this year or next and that would be out of the question now. This coupled with the fact that the Sonics will likely use SNU as their practice gym could make it unavailable to Nationals.
So what is going on? With all the rumors there must be at least some truth mixed in, right? Hmmm, those are very good questions and I would like to answer you right now but I all I can tell you is that nothing is set in stone. We are working on a number of very important and exciting things for 2009 and I will be prepared to make an official announcement on July 24th.
I will hold a conference call at 8:00 PM CST
1-218-339-2626
Access Code 704478
I have 600 lines reserved so anyone who wants to call in is welcome.
I will also post a blog when the phone call is over with the details.
So what should you do between now and next Thursday? Just wait because more than likely any action you take will likely have to be undone since things are still up in the air. Everyone will find out the final word at the same time and that will cut down on confusion, panic and rumors.
Talk to you next Thursday,
Tim Flatt

The Founder’s Club
In June we announced that we would be introducing a number of new projects this summer. These projects are in conjunction with Nationals but they are also separate from our current Nationals Structure. We have decided to form the Founder's Club as a means to create and develop these projects. Here is an overview of the Founder's Club. Our next big announcement will come within the week.
This summer we have created The Founder’s Club. The Founder’s Club is named in honor of Dr. Jim Leininger. Dr. Leininger is a true entrepreneur and visionary who founded Homeschool Basketball Nationals. Dr Leininger has over 50 business ventures that included founding KC Worldwide and ownership in the San Antonio Spurs. Dr. Leininger was a homeschool dad and the coach of a National Championship FEAST Patriots teams in the early 1990’s.
The Founders Club is designed to be a tool that helps homeschool families and teams throughout the country. Additionally the Founder’s Club will raise funds to help promote the extra things that are important to the continued enhancement of the National Tournament. The Founder’s Club will be responsible for the Homeschool Showcase. “One of the things that the Founder’s Club does is helps programs that want to be more than just participants at Nationals become contributors. I think the long term health of Nationals will be directly impacted by how many programs want to roll up their sleeves and work with the Founder’s Club” states Tim Flatt, the Executive Director of the NCHBC. “We have tried to design this club in a way that is consistent with how Jim (Dr Leininger) functions as a businessman. While I known Jim is a very generous person, literally giving away more money than most people will make in a lifetime, he believes that people should pay their way in things they believe are important. One of the things that makes Jim unique is that throughout his life he has consistently believed in providing a way for those who want to shall we say earn their way. So I think the Founders Club is a perfect example of this characteristic in Jim’s life.”
The Founder’s Club is free for every team and program to sign up for. Once your program is part of the Founder’s Club you will receive the following benefits:
1) Access to all special fundraising programs and ventures.
2) Free tickets for all players and coaches to the 2009 Homeschool Showcase.

Latest Infromation
Plans for 2009 Nationals
This summer as we prepare for the Eighteenth Annual National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships to be held in March of 2009, we will be making a number of very significant announcements about four very important projects we are developing. We are faced with numerous hurdles that need to be overcome in order to assure that we remain on course for achieving the goals that have been our focus since I was appointed Executive Director of the NCHBC in 2000. These goals have been foundational in every decision that we make in the administration and direction of the NCHBC. Here is a list of our goals:
1) To host a family event that emphases our Christian heritage.
2) To provide a quality event that families are willing to take a week of vacation to attend.
3) To provide a balanced tournament that:A. Provides a format that allows all teams to compete with teams at or about their talent level.B. Provides the top teams a chance to play in a National Championship atmosphere.C. Provides an opportunity for coaches, players and parents to see what it is possible by seeing the top level teams.
4) To showcase the top talent for college coaches and the media.
5) To demonstrate to others that Homeschool basketball is not behind and our tournament is equal to state public school tournament caliber.
While I believe we have been making steady strides in achieving all of our goals, we have some serious concerns about making sure goals one and two stay intact. The main hurdles that we need to make sure .... to finish this story go to http://homeschoolbasketball.com/fund_raising_packet.pdf

Free Team Fees in 2009
Coach
We know that every year when it comes crunch time you have players and families trying to decide if they can afford to attend Nationals. There is no reason for that to ever happen again. We have put together a very effective fund raising plan that can be used by any family or player in this situation. Since it is normally the same players that have these issues I like to recommend that you make sure they have this information as soon as possible so they can begin raising funds now.
We are offering a special promotion for FREE Team Fees in 2009 (see details below)
50% Discount --We will be offering a 50% discount for any team that has at least 10 of its players raise $100 by October 31st. The reason we are pushing for $100 is that will also give all of these players free player registration, free pizza party ticket and a specially designed nationals t-shirt.
Free --We will completely waive your team fee if all your players raise at least $100 and the team total is over $2500. To summarize if your team met this goal of $2500 here is what you would get.
1) All players fees covered
2) All team fees covered
3) $750 cash rebate to use for whatever expenses you would like.
Fund raising details can be found at http://nchbcsponsor.blogspot.com/
I am back in Oklahoma (just had our first Grand Daughter last week Isibella Claire Flatt on June 2nd) and will be here and available by phone 1-405-831-0394 and e-mail for the next three weeks. My goal is to get caught up and be available to help teams get started on this program.

The Showcase -- Pictures and Video
The Showcase
Rob and I believed that the Showcase would have a really positive effect at Nationals, but in no way did we anticipate the credibility it would bring to the overall event. The coverage at the local news level as well as the credibility the New York Times article has brought is amazing. I will be honest I bought the New York Times that Sunday and put it in the car, then a couple of days later when I went to find the article I was stunned it was on the front page. I talked with Joe before the tournament and when I told him about the Showcase, he agreed to come and check it out. To stay in context he was stunned by what he saw on Wednesday evening.
We are in the process of pulling together all the high quality pictures or video from the showcase as we want to put together a significant website section to help us get more media coverage next year, more scouts next year and maybe even a title sponsor. If you or someone in your program has any pictures or video we can use please forward them to me tim@flattmail.com
Also if anyone has a picture of Geno Auriemma at the game Friday Night at John Marshall I would like to get a hold of a copy of that as well.

Results if you see incomplete or incorrect results please let Cheryl know. If you left before the awards ceremony and would like your medals and plaques sent please contact Rob.
Official and Christian Character Complaints
This year seemed to go off very well from our prospective and from what we heard from you. Cheryl and I will spend the next few weeks recovering. Yesterday Cheryl read through the complaints and we were very encouraged to see that complaints about officiating were at an all time low. I am not sure officiating was necessarily a lot better but I believe the more experienced programs and coaches become people realize we need to focus on what we can control.
Other the other side we noticed that there were plenty of forms filled out in relation to teams handling things in unchrist-like manner. This may be a reaction to what I said in the coaches meeting. Bit as we talked we decided that this could be a real positive if it is handled correctly. Here is the plan – we will be typing up all of the complaints over the next few weeks and we will forward them to the program that is being accused of improper behavior. The idea is to let the program be aware of the perception that they created in that circumstance. We believe this will allow teams to evaluate what is being said to us. We are not looking for teams to get back to us with answers as most are isolated situations that coaches and boards will be able to use as teaching and correctional tools. If you haven’t filed a complaint about another teams actions during a game and you feel like it was really something that was wrong please send me an e-mail. I will forward all complaints. No please hear this I will not accept anonymous complaints but I will withhold your name and information when I forward it if you feel that it may cause problems in the future.

Time to get FIRED UP
I am looking forward to seeing you all (a little Oklahoman for some of you Yankees) tomorrow.
We have three great coaches meetings to choose from – (actually they are all the same but I am trying to make it sound really exciting).
Coaches Meetings --11:00, 3:00 (16/18 pick one) 9:45PM (10/12/14)
I talked to a few coaches tonight at the convention center and I guess there was some discussion if I would have some new stories for the coaches meeting. I know coaches have a lot to worry about this week so I want to relieve some stress right up front, worry not I have a couple new stories. Below is a post I put on the players blog.
Welcome to Oklahoma City
It looks like great weather this week 60-70’s during the day and a nice crisp mid 30’s at night. We plan the schedule, God plans the weather.
Teams have begun arriving and 300 teams either in town or on the way to town it looks to be a FANTASTIC week of basketball.
Player Registration, Coach Registration and t-shirt pick up and sales will open at 9:00 AM tomorrow.
Team USA Registration opens at 10:00.
Check out the special personalized t-shirts design to commemorate the 1st Annual National Tournament Showcase. This year it was too late to get a sponsor for the Showcase so we designed the shirts as a way to help offset the $12,000 extra cost to run this Showcase. We hope you will like the shirts and lend a helping hand by purchasing one.
All registration is open until 9:00 PM.
There are meetings for:
Team USA Noon (16/18) 9:00 (10/12/14)
Coaches Meetings --11:00, 3:00 (16/18 pick one) 9:45PM (10/12/14)
All American and their coach – 10:30 PM
We look forward to seeing all of you,
Tim Flatt

Meeting Change
The third coaches meetings will be moved back to 9:45PM (originally 9:15)
This changes are to accommodate overlap with games on Monday.

Friday Update
Brackets are now in their final form. What that means is there will be no changes unless we made an administrational mistake. It also means that we have made the final changes without notification. If any changes are made do to our errors than we will post on both blogs and if they happen after the tournament starts we will contact the coaches involved.
Extra coaches’ badges – if you ordered extra badges and we received it, Cheryl confirmed it via e-mail. We had some issues with receiving e-mails so if you sent an e-mail and did not hear back please send it again to nationals@flattmail.com
I think most of the basics are set and our list for the next two days looks manageable so I am going to call it a night.

Brackets and Changes
We finished up brackets around 3:30 this morning (they are posted), I triple checked them but I am sure there are still some mistakes. We will go through them two more times this evening and catch all the gym and start time mistakes. What helps us if you look for the flow errors – follow your team through in every scenario (G12 can’t do this yet because I am still waiting to post until this Team USA stuff shorts itself out). Also I have made a dozen or so changes to seeding where it is an obvious mistake or if a team is scheduled to play a very familiar opponent in the first two games. I have two new ones to change B14 SATCH White and B16 Cincinnati Trailblazers – I am going to let Cheryl sleep in for a while to sleep for a while and I am telling you this because if you requested:
1) A simple game time change due to travel on Monday or Tuesday
2) A change because of a familiar opponent
3) Or an obvious seeding error (we beat them 3 times and you have them in front of us)
And it is not changed now, it is not scheduled to be changed – somehow in my mind I think I have already done it, so you need to contact me again. If I reject your request I will respond by e-mail, so hearing nothing from me does not mean I don’t like you and I am not going to make the change.
I am originally from the east coast (north) so I have a unique combination of Oklahoma friendliness and east coast honesty. Here is how this works out. I work very hard to work for you to make this a great experience for you and your kids; I will bend over backwards for you whenever possible. Now if you are unreasonable year after year and I get feed up with it and you make unreasonable requests – I just e-mail you and tell you I don’t like you and I am not going to make the change. It is so much easier this way. LOL Cheryl will read this post when she gets up and say “you are not allowed to make any more post when you are tired with me checking them first”

Boys18 Divsion II and III
I just finished the brackets for Boys 18 Division II and III seeding Brackets. Cheryl will create them while I am at practice (yes I still coach, at least try to during this time of year). When I get back I will double check gym assignmnets andRob will double check the seeding. We should have them posted by late evening.
I went to a couple of the new gyms this morning to make sure evrything was all set. We are really blessed we have 11 of our gyms are muliti-million dollar that have been built in the last 2 years.

Getting Close
Tonight we finished up all seeding games, except Boys 18 Division II and III. I am having some trouble configuring the seeding games into brackets. The plan is to have the finished seeding posted sometime before noon. Then to finish off the last two (listed above) on Wednesday. At that point I am going to have to change my focus to all of the stuff that is backing up, like coaches’ notebooks, overall schedule, gym notebooks and all sorts of other things that are popping up. I will get back to the brackets on Friday and try to finish them off by Saturday.
Here is what we need you to do with the seeding:
1) Look it over make sure it flows where you can tell where you go and who you will play based on a standard 8 team bracket. Sometimes we miss something like getting a game or seed number wrong.
2) Check for unexpected changes in the brackets. One of the issues is that after Rob finishes the seeding he gives it to me to put into seeding games. Due to the fact that we try to include everyone who wants to attend, there is never a set situation where 1 play 32. That is true in 32 team brackets but doesn’t work in 34, 40 and 42 team brackets which we have, so I have to make decisions which we call regional considerations. In essence if the brackets ended up with a Dallas team playing another Dallas area team, I move teams up or down slightly to avoid that situation. If it creates a situation that concerns you (about your team and only your team) e-mail us and explain it. Also if you match up in the first two rounds with a team you play a number of times during the year let us know.
3) Make sure that if your program has two teams in a division that we listed the right one in the right spot.
I have until the 7th to make changes, so please help to make sure we have them right.

Seeding
Coaches thank you very much for all of your seeding feedback. At this point we assume that everyone has had more than enough time to give us any important feedback. We are now moving to the next stage which is bracketing. We will be posting the bracket links on this blog when they are available.
Thanks,
Rob
Thanks,
Rob
Update
I spent most of the day recreating many of the documentation needed for brackets. There is a chance that in a few days they will be able to recover all my data but by that time we should be done. What is hurting me most is my e-mail address book, I feel crippled to not be able to fire of e-mails. But we are more than surviving.
The Map should be done tomorrow
The updated Rosters were posted today (Check your rosters again -- players blog)
The Team USA list was posted today
All-Americans were announced
The Girls 12 brackets were finished and the seeding was posted (we listed TBA for where the winners and losers go because we may not have enough girls for two team USA) so we have brackets for both 16 and 18 teams as well as seeding advancement for both and we will post the way it will go as soon as we know what will be the final number.
Boys 12 was corrected -- page one and two were flip flopped (pretty ugly --but it is fixed)
The Boys and Girls 16 brackets were finished today – I just checked the brackets and made a few corrections but it is 3:20 and I hate to post anything this late, so I will sleep and recheck one more time. At that point I will post the girls but the boys may have to wait for a little longer as we had three new teams want in the tournament today.
Saganaw MI Boys 16
Winston Salem, NC Girls 14
Central Missouri Girls 18 (we knew about them over the weekend)
So we won’t post the boys 16 until we see how that shakes out tomorrow.
I think I will tackle Boys 18 Division 1 and Boys 14 tomorrow. There is no chance of the numbers changing in those divisions and I won’t have to re-bracket.

All Americans and 3 Point Shooting Contest
We have posted the All-American selections on the player’s blog. The selection was much more complicated than it looked like it would be. I am sure not everyone is going to happy but what can you do, I am sure I will take some heat on it even though I only cast one of twenty-four votes that is just one of the awesome blessings of being a leader. In the end I am glad we did it, after all it will be a great experience for the kids and the last time I checked that is why we are doing this.
Look over the list if you are having some real difficulty understanding why someone was left out, drop me an e-mail. That won’t change anything but maybe it will relieve some tension and it will cause us to look very carefully at the person for Honorable Mention.
Very important – coach if you have an All-American there is a meeting for you and your player Monday evening at the convention center at 10:30PM. All the games will be over by that time. This is a Mandatory meeting if your player wants to play in the All-American Game.
One last note, due to an overwhelming response teams (varsity) will be limited to two players in the 3-point shooting contest.

1) A coaches’ notebook with very important information.
2) A nice 2008 Nationals coffee mug (that will be selling at the T-shirt booth for $10).

The price is $15.00 (and yes that includes 2008 Nationals mug). Now here is the best deal, if you register between now and midnight Saturday night your cost will be $10.00 as it makes it so much easier for our staff to handle the making of badges.

Significant Hurdle to Overcome
Yeserday when I returned from Lebanon I turned on my computer to find that my operating system was gone (I guess a hard drive failure). We have treied to recover data but to no avail. I purchased a new laptop and I am moving on. The problem is that I literally had everything on my computer from gym assignments, schedules, coaches note book contents, budget, e-mail records and many more things including maybe the most important my checklist. The biggest problem is we are 6 days out and that is at least 100 hours of work that I am not going to able to duplicate all of it. I am going to try to focus on the most important things. and pray I miss nothing.
What can you do?
1) Pray
2) Be patient if I am slow in responding (and if it isn't really that important ....)
3) I had over 70 e-mails that I didn't answer that I was going to answer when I returend home if you are missing a response just send me the e-mail agian.

Official Team Rosters -- Player's blog Post
Coach we have posted the following to the player's blog. The bottom line is you need to make sure all you players are on the Offficial Roster if they are not simply fill out the form below and list all players that are coming but are not on the official list we will work through the issues of lost registrations and things of that nature with the families, I am sure you have plenty to do. Take 5 minutes and check to see if all your players are listed with your program we are not worrried about players playing in multiplae age groups just make sure they are listed in your program area http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/official_roster.pdf
Then list all the players not on the list in the to be added in OK category in the form below
http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/roster_change.htm
How important is this? If a player is not on our final list which will be compiled of the players currently on the list and the change forms, he/she will not be eligible to play at Nationals.

Important All-American Information
This is a very important message if you have nominated an All-American candidate. Before I go into the instructions it is possible that due to the adjusting to working through blogs that one of you might say that you haven’t had a chance to nominate anyone yet, If you are in that boat here is the link http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/all_american.htm and you have until Monday to complete the form. Then you will also need to follow the additional steps below.
Additional Information needed for current All-American Candidates. The best way to get us the info is to cut and paste it into an email and send it to flatt_rob@yahoo.com put your answers after the colon in each catagory --- one reply is needed for each player you nominated:
Player's Name:
Rate Player:
Give your honest opinion based on what you have seen in the past at Nationals and this year’s homeschool talent how good is your player.
One of the top 6 player in the Nation Rate as a #4
One of the top 18 players in the Nation Rate as a #3
One of the top 36 players in the Nation Rate as a #2
One of the top 72 players in the Nation Rate as a #1
Rate Your Confidence Level:
Coaches please give us your confidence level for this rating on a scale of 1-5
5 is I have been to Nationals for the last 10 years and I know what the competition and you’re sure this is where your player belongs.
1 is this my first year coaching so I am not sure how to rate it.
Rate Your Teams Strength of Schedule:
4A play 75% Public Schools and have a winning record against them
4B play 75% Public Schools and have a losing record against them
3A play 50% Public Schools and have a winning record against them
3B play 50% Public Schools and have a losing record against them
2A play 25% Public Schools and have a winning record against them
2B play 25% Public Schools and have a losing record against them
1A play No Public School
Rate your confidence in the stat you provided:
Simply put are the exact stats or is there some estimating in the stats?
Team Stats:
How many points per game does your team score?
How many points per game do you allow?
Coach, we are not looking for you to “sell” us on your player. We want the most accurate information we can get and we have been asked to check any information that looks out of line and report it to the committee. It would be a shame to have deserving players left off because of inaccuracies, which allow a player to look better than he is.
We know your heart and just want to ask you all to help us safe guard this process.

Player's Blog --- VERY IMPORTANT
The best thing you can do for your parents and players is take a few minutes and e-mail all of them the link for our players blog http://basketballnationals.blogspot.com
Currently almost of 50% of the player’s e-mail addresses for this years Nationals are not getting through. That means that 50% of your players and families are not getting to the blog, and that means they are going to miss important information.
Imagine the disturbing scene painted below:
A hysterical mama comes screaming at the Nationals’ staff because their little Johnny (who turned 19 in December) missed out on something. Our staff says calmly (of course), “I’m sorry but this year we posted all the information on the National’s blog.” Their shocked reply is, “What blog?” and the staff member replies, “The one we begged Johnny’s coach to tell you about.” Now by time she finds you she has had 30 minutes to think of every injustice little Johnny has endured under your coaching tenure and then…well, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.
I don’t know about you but that kind of sends chills up my spine just thinking about it. The bottom line is we won’t hang you out to dry quite that bad. But we all know that “mama “ isn’t going to be happy until she gets a pound of flesh from someone because little Johnny missed out on something. Just remember that by time I get to Nationals most of my flesh is gone, so it just might be your flesh that she ends up getting.
On the other hand, you could just make sure that all your families know about the blog and then if mama messes up, well… it isn’t our problem.

Slam Dunk and Three Point Shooting Contest
We have completed the on line sign up form for the Slam Dunk and Three Point Shooting Contest. Players can not sign up directly; you have to sign them up. We are counting on you weeding out the players that can only if the wind is blowing right, keep in mind we have to do tryouts for all these kids when they get here and I sure wouldn’t want kids to embarrass your program. The same is true for three point shooters please don’t nominate kids how shot 25% even if there parents want you to.

"Official" Team Rosters
Coach, this year we are changing our “official roster” procedure. The way that we will handle official rosters is we will compile a list of all the players that have completed registration as of 2/16/08. This list will be completed on the weekend of the 23rd as we want to give the last registrations an opportunity to arrive in the mail. This list will than be sent to each coach via e-mail. At that point you will either need to confirm that is your roster or provide us with a list of additional players who will register when they arrive in Oklahoma City. We will continue our policy of allowing coaches to make changes to their rosters up until the coaches’ meeting. The official team roster and roster provided for the program have nothing to do with each other.
One thing that will be different this year is that when a player registers in OKC they will receive a registration verification to give to you. Any player that is not on the list we send you and does not provide you with registration verification is considered an ineligible player. The penalty for using an ineligible player is the forfeiture of games. We request that you give this matter careful attention as the responsibility for making sure all your players are registered is directly on your shoulders.
We are looking for a couple of sponsors for the Showcase. You may have a couple of families in your program that might be able to step in and help on behalf of your program and Nationals. Here is the information, feel free to pass it on.
The National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships have been held in Oklahoma City since March of 2000. Since that time the tournament has grown from 100 teams to 300 teams. This year our Board of Directors decided to add some new features to the tournament that are not covered by team and player fees. We are committed to continuing our practice of having no gate charge for the National Tournament and to not increasing our team and player fees beyond current levels despite escalating costs for gyms, officials and other expenses.
In 2000 a number of familes from the Storm thought it would be a good idea to have a Coaches’ Hospitality Suite, giving coaches a place to find bracket updates, enjoy some refreshments, and get away from the pressures of the tournament while fellowshipping with other coaches from around the country. It was an immediate hit with the coaches, but it did mean taking on expenses not covered by fees. So, we asked the families of the OKC Storm to make donations to cover this expense. I am pleased to say that over the last 8 years Storm families have graciously donated almost $100,000 to cover the expenses for the Coaches’ Hospitality Suite. Storm families take great pride in demonstrating hospitality in this way, and the Coaches’ Hospitality Suite has remained popular with coaches, enhancing their Nationals Experience.
This year we we’re adding four new features to boost the Nationals Experience for everyone. They are:
The Showcase, a tournament showcase of talent, including a dunk contest and other exhibitions of individual skills. It’ll be great fun for all, but on top of that, coaches and scouts from around the country will be invited to The Showcase.
Sponsorship for The Showcase: $5,000
College Coach and Scout Hospitality Much like the Coaches’ Hospitality Suite, a central gathering place for coaches and scouts.
Sponsorship for College Coach and Scout Hospitality: $3,500
Trophies Just like everything else, Trophies go up a little every year. And we want to continue providing top quality trophies and medals. Including the new All-American Trophies.
Sponsorship for Trophies: $4,000
Media Expense Cultivating media contacts means important recognition for the tournament as a whole, and for individual players who might not otherwise get the kind of attention they deserve.
Sponsorship for Media Expense: $2,000
We’d like to see four programs step forward and underwrite these four very important expenses that have been included to enhance the Nationals Experience for all. We also will gladly accept individual or family donations. All donations are 100% tax deductible.
If you would like to make an individual donation click on the donate button.
If you would like to spearhead sponsoring one of these projects contact Mickey O’Neill at 405-550-1466. We would love to have this year’s program say:
The 2008 NCHBC sponsored by HCYA
All American Trophies sponsored by Tulsa NOAH
Media Hospitality sponsored by CHSA
Or whatever program steps up to the plate to sponsor the event.
The fact is that virtually all of our programs have families that are capable of stepping in and helping make Nationals better than ever.

We are just a few weeks out from the start of the 2008 Nationals. Last night I made a post on the players’ blog projecting 304 teams. The breakdown is as follows:
Boys 10’s – 12 Teams (1 opening)
Boys 12’s – 22 Teams (1 opening)
Boys 14’s – 40 Teams (1 opening)
Boys 16’s – 32 Teams (1 opening) –Full As of 2/14

Girls 16’s – 24 Teams (1 opening)
Girls 18’s – 44 Teams (3 openings)
Since the post we received a registration for Boys 16, so at this point this division is full and we are starting a waiting list. I expect to fill a number of the division by the end of the weekend. If your program is thinking about adding a team, make sure to register on line as soon as possible.
I would like to recommend that you sign up for the players’ blog if you haven’t already http://basketballnationals.blogspot.com Please make sure you encourage all of your players and families to either sign up to receive alerts form the blog or to check it daily between now and Nationals.
One thing I am really enjoying about the blog is that I can post something when it comes up verse waiting for the next e-mail.

5 Weeks to Nationals
As Nationals quickly approaches we have decided to create this coaches blog to make sure we can get you important information. There will be a lot of information that you will need in order to make your team’s “Nationals Experience” complete.
1) Assistant Coaches – sometimes my e-mails get filtered into junk mail so if you have an assistant or two that you want to add to my coaches list to make sure between you that you get all the e-mails just send me their e-mail addresses.
2) The cutoff for holding spots for unpaid teams is Feb10th after that we will begin closing off divisions as they get to a number that we can close off. If you haven’t paid but are sending a check let me know.
3) All Americans – Varsity age only – please get your nomination post marked by 2/10 and e-mail me so we can make sure none get lost in snail mail without us knowing it. More on All Americans below.
4) Player Registration – Please remember all players must register individually to play at Nationals. The form is on line at http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/ As of today we have 1450 players registered. Last year we had 2500 pre-registered. The deadline for pre-registration is Feb 15th, so please get the word out to your team it will save them money and eliminate an extra step during Nationals.
5) Team USA – if you have siblings of your team members coming to Nationals you might want to recommend to them that they play on a Team USA. This is great fun and an awesome way to hook those kids in for next year.
6) Seeding Questionnaire is available on line at http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/team_seeding-08.htm please have them filled out by Feb 20th. Please wait until Monday before filling the form out as we are still fine tuning it.
7) Rooms at the Clarion – I still have some rooms available at the Clarion if you want to stay at the host hotel let me know.
I have had numerous questions about All Americans and the All Star game. Let me take a few minutes and go through the process.
All American Selection –
1) We are currently accepting nominations from coaches through 2/10 (postmarked).
2) The first step will be to work through an initial process that will narrow the field to no more than 90 players.
3) At that point the list of players will be sent to the selection committee (24 individuals from around the country). Each member will divide players into 5 categories of 18 players. 1-5 (5 being the highest and receiving 5 points for this vote).
4) The votes will be totaled.
5) The DVD’s will be used when there are hard decisions for 1st, 2nd or 3rd team.
6) The 1st, 2nd and 3rd team will be finalized and the Pete Maravich Winner will be voted on Saturday morning by the committee after watching the six 1st All Americans play.
All Star Game
1) There will be four quarters of boys and girls basketball. Two quarters will be played by the first and second team and two by the third team.
2) Teams will be divided the first week of March.
3) Coaches will be chosen to coach each of the four teams.
4) Players will play no more than 10 minutes each, so it shouldn’t wear anyone out.
