Official Team Rosters -- Player's blog Post

Coach we have posted the following to the player's blog. The bottom line is you need to make sure all you players are on the Offficial Roster if they are not simply fill out the form below and list all players that are coming but are not on the official list we will work through the issues of lost registrations and things of that nature with the families, I am sure you have plenty to do. Take 5 minutes and check to see if all your players are listed with your program we are not worrried about players playing in multiplae age groups just make sure they are listed in your program area http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/official_roster.pdf

Then list all the players not on the list in the to be added in OK category in the form below

http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/roster_change.htm

How important is this? If a player is not on our final list which will be compiled of the players currently on the list and the change forms, he/she will not be eligible to play at Nationals.

Important All-American Information

This is a very important message if you have nominated an All-American candidate. Before I go into the instructions it is possible that due to the adjusting to working through blogs that one of you might say that you haven’t had a chance to nominate anyone yet, If you are in that boat here is the link http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/all_american.htm and you have until Monday to complete the form. Then you will also need to follow the additional steps below.

Additional Information needed for current All-American Candidates. The best way to get us the info is to cut and paste it into an email and send it to flatt_rob@yahoo.com put your answers after the colon in each catagory --- one reply is needed for each player you nominated:

Player's Name:

Rate Player:
Give your honest opinion based on what you have seen in the past at Nationals and this year’s homeschool talent how good is your player.
One of the top 6 player in the Nation Rate as a #4
One of the top 18 players in the Nation Rate as a #3
One of the top 36 players in the Nation Rate as a #2
One of the top 72 players in the Nation Rate as a #1

Rate Your Confidence Level:
Coaches please give us your confidence level for this rating on a scale of 1-5
5 is I have been to Nationals for the last 10 years and I know what the competition and you’re sure this is where your player belongs.
1 is this my first year coaching so I am not sure how to rate it.

Rate Your Teams Strength of Schedule:
4A play 75% Public Schools and have a winning record against them
4B play 75% Public Schools and have a losing record against them
3A play 50% Public Schools and have a winning record against them
3B play 50% Public Schools and have a losing record against them
2A play 25% Public Schools and have a winning record against them
2B play 25% Public Schools and have a losing record against them
1A play No Public School

Rate your confidence in the stat you provided:
Simply put are the exact stats or is there some estimating in the stats?

Team Stats:
How many points per game does your team score?
How many points per game do you allow?

Coach, we are not looking for you to “sell” us on your player. We want the most accurate information we can get and we have been asked to check any information that looks out of line and report it to the committee. It would be a shame to have deserving players left off because of inaccuracies, which allow a player to look better than he is.

We know your heart and just want to ask you all to help us safe guard this process.

Player's Blog --- VERY IMPORTANT

The best thing you can do for your parents and players is take a few minutes and e-mail all of them the link for our players blog http://basketballnationals.blogspot.com

Currently almost of 50% of the player’s e-mail addresses for this years Nationals are not getting through. That means that 50% of your players and families are not getting to the blog, and that means they are going to miss important information.

Imagine the disturbing scene painted below:

A hysterical mama comes screaming at the Nationals’ staff because their little Johnny (who turned 19 in December) missed out on something. Our staff says calmly (of course), “I’m sorry but this year we posted all the information on the National’s blog.” Their shocked reply is, “What blog?” and the staff member replies, “The one we begged Johnny’s coach to tell you about.” Now by time she finds you she has had 30 minutes to think of every injustice little Johnny has endured under your coaching tenure and then…well, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.

I don’t know about you but that kind of sends chills up my spine just thinking about it. The bottom line is we won’t hang you out to dry quite that bad. But we all know that “mama “ isn’t going to be happy until she gets a pound of flesh from someone because little Johnny missed out on something. Just remember that by time I get to Nationals most of my flesh is gone, so it just might be your flesh that she ends up getting.

On the other hand, you could just make sure that all your families know about the blog and then if mama messes up, well… it isn’t our problem.

Slam Dunk and Three Point Shooting Contest

We have completed the on line sign up form for the Slam Dunk and Three Point Shooting Contest. Players can not sign up directly; you have to sign them up. We are counting on you weeding out the players that can only if the wind is blowing right, keep in mind we have to do tryouts for all these kids when they get here and I sure wouldn’t want kids to embarrass your program. The same is true for three point shooters please don’t nominate kids how shot 25% even if there parents want you to.

"Official" Team Rosters

Coach, this year we are changing our “official roster” procedure. The way that we will handle official rosters is we will compile a list of all the players that have completed registration as of 2/16/08. This list will be completed on the weekend of the 23rd as we want to give the last registrations an opportunity to arrive in the mail. This list will than be sent to each coach via e-mail. At that point you will either need to confirm that is your roster or provide us with a list of additional players who will register when they arrive in Oklahoma City. We will continue our policy of allowing coaches to make changes to their rosters up until the coaches’ meeting. The official team roster and roster provided for the program have nothing to do with each other.

One thing that will be different this year is that when a player registers in OKC they will receive a registration verification to give to you. Any player that is not on the list we send you and does not provide you with registration verification is considered an ineligible player. The penalty for using an ineligible player is the forfeiture of games. We request that you give this matter careful attention as the responsibility for making sure all your players are registered is directly on your shoulders.

We are looking for a couple of sponsors for the Showcase. You may have a couple of families in your program that might be able to step in and help on behalf of your program and Nationals. Here is the information, feel free to pass it on.

The National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships have been held in Oklahoma City since March of 2000. Since that time the tournament has grown from 100 teams to 300 teams. This year our Board of Directors decided to add some new features to the tournament that are not covered by team and player fees. We are committed to continuing our practice of having no gate charge for the National Tournament and to not increasing our team and player fees beyond current levels despite escalating costs for gyms, officials and other expenses.

In 2000 a number of familes from the Storm thought it would be a good idea to have a Coaches’ Hospitality Suite, giving coaches a place to find bracket updates, enjoy some refreshments, and get away from the pressures of the tournament while fellowshipping with other coaches from around the country. It was an immediate hit with the coaches, but it did mean taking on expenses not covered by fees. So, we asked the families of the OKC Storm to make donations to cover this expense. I am pleased to say that over the last 8 years Storm families have graciously donated almost $100,000 to cover the expenses for the Coaches’ Hospitality Suite. Storm families take great pride in demonstrating hospitality in this way, and the Coaches’ Hospitality Suite has remained popular with coaches, enhancing their Nationals Experience.

This year we we’re adding four new features to boost the Nationals Experience for everyone. They are:

The Showcase, a tournament showcase of talent, including a dunk contest and other exhibitions of individual skills. It’ll be great fun for all, but on top of that, coaches and scouts from around the country will be invited to The Showcase.
Sponsorship for The Showcase: $5,000

College Coach and Scout Hospitality Much like the Coaches’ Hospitality Suite, a central gathering place for coaches and scouts.
Sponsorship for College Coach and Scout Hospitality: $3,500

Trophies Just like everything else, Trophies go up a little every year. And we want to continue providing top quality trophies and medals. Including the new All-American Trophies.
Sponsorship for Trophies: $4,000

Media Expense Cultivating media contacts means important recognition for the tournament as a whole, and for individual players who might not otherwise get the kind of attention they deserve.
Sponsorship for Media Expense: $2,000

We’d like to see four programs step forward and underwrite these four very important expenses that have been included to enhance the Nationals Experience for all. We also will gladly accept individual or family donations. All donations are 100% tax deductible.

If you would like to make an individual donation click on the donate button.

If you would like to spearhead sponsoring one of these projects contact Mickey O’Neill at 405-550-1466. We would love to have this year’s program say:

The 2008 NCHBC sponsored by HCYA
All American Trophies sponsored by Tulsa NOAH
Media Hospitality sponsored by CHSA
Or whatever program steps up to the plate to sponsor the event.

The fact is that virtually all of our programs have families that are capable of stepping in and helping make Nationals better than ever.

Since the post we received a registration for Boys 16, so at this point this division is full and we are starting a waiting list. I expect to fill a number of the division by the end of the weekend. If your program is thinking about adding a team, make sure to register on line as soon as possible.

I would like to recommend that you sign up for the players’ blog if you haven’t already http://basketballnationals.blogspot.com Please make sure you encourage all of your players and families to either sign up to receive alerts form the blog or to check it daily between now and Nationals.

One thing I am really enjoying about the blog is that I can post something when it comes up verse waiting for the next e-mail.

Important Announcement --We have decided to extend the All-American Nomination period until Feb 20th. We ask that if you are going to submit a nomination that you use the only form to make sure we get it in time. If we need a DVD we will contact you. http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/all_american.htm

Additionally we have decided to change the name from the All Star game to the All-American Game.

Also we need team seeding questionnaires filled out by 20th but if you can get it done by the end of this weekend it would really help us out. http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/team_seeding-08.htm

5 Weeks to Nationals

As Nationals quickly approaches we have decided to create this coaches blog to make sure we can get you important information. There will be a lot of information that you will need in order to make your team’s “Nationals Experience” complete.

1) Assistant Coaches – sometimes my e-mails get filtered into junk mail so if you have an assistant or two that you want to add to my coaches list to make sure between you that you get all the e-mails just send me their e-mail addresses.
2) The cutoff for holding spots for unpaid teams is Feb10th after that we will begin closing off divisions as they get to a number that we can close off. If you haven’t paid but are sending a check let me know.
3) All Americans – Varsity age only – please get your nomination post marked by 2/10 and e-mail me so we can make sure none get lost in snail mail without us knowing it. More on All Americans below.
4) Player Registration – Please remember all players must register individually to play at Nationals. The form is on line at http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/ As of today we have 1450 players registered. Last year we had 2500 pre-registered. The deadline for pre-registration is Feb 15th, so please get the word out to your team it will save them money and eliminate an extra step during Nationals.
5) Team USA – if you have siblings of your team members coming to Nationals you might want to recommend to them that they play on a Team USA. This is great fun and an awesome way to hook those kids in for next year.
6) Seeding Questionnaire is available on line at http://www.homeschoolbasketball.com/team_seeding-08.htm please have them filled out by Feb 20th. Please wait until Monday before filling the form out as we are still fine tuning it.
7) Rooms at the Clarion – I still have some rooms available at the Clarion if you want to stay at the host hotel let me know.

I have had numerous questions about All Americans and the All Star game. Let me take a few minutes and go through the process.

All American Selection –
1) We are currently accepting nominations from coaches through 2/10 (postmarked).
2) The first step will be to work through an initial process that will narrow the field to no more than 90 players.
3) At that point the list of players will be sent to the selection committee (24 individuals from around the country). Each member will divide players into 5 categories of 18 players. 1-5 (5 being the highest and receiving 5 points for this vote).
4) The votes will be totaled.
5) The DVD’s will be used when there are hard decisions for 1st, 2nd or 3rd team.
6) The 1st, 2nd and 3rd team will be finalized and the Pete Maravich Winner will be voted on Saturday morning by the committee after watching the six 1st All Americans play.

All Star Game
1) There will be four quarters of boys and girls basketball. Two quarters will be played by the first and second team and two by the third team.
2) Teams will be divided the first week of March.
3) Coaches will be chosen to coach each of the four teams.
4) Players will play no more than 10 minutes each, so it shouldn’t wear anyone out.
